IBC Tote Fittings Guide 2026

Buyer's Guide⏱ 12 min read🔬 5 fittings reviewed ✓ Updated June 2026

Getting the right fitting for an IBC tote connection is half plumbing knowledge and half decoding the tote's non-standard thread sizes. The bottom valve uses BSP thread, the top bung uses S60x6, and the small vent uses NPT — three different standards on one container. Connecting these to standard North American hardware requires specific adapters, and using the wrong material for your fluid type means early failure.

This guide covers every IBC fitting type, what thread standard each uses, how to seal them correctly, and which specific products work best.

IBC Tote Fitting Types

🔩
Bulkhead Fittings
Pass-through fittings installed in drilled holes in the tote wall. Two-piece design compresses a rubber gasket for a watertight seal. The most versatile IBC fitting.
🔗
Camlock Couplings
Quick-connect/disconnect cam-and-groove couplings. Standard in industrial fluid transfer. One-hand operation, no tools needed. Available in plastic, aluminum, and stainless.
🔄
BSP/NPT Adapters
Thread adapters for connecting different thread standards. BSP (common on IBC valves) to NPT (common in North American hardware) adapters are frequently needed.
🎯
Bung Adapters
Fit into the S60x6 top bung opening to convert it to standard pipe thread (1", 2") or to accept specific accessories like vents, level gauges, or immersion heaters.

⭐ Most Versatile
Banjo 2" Bulkhead Fitting
Polypropylene bulkhead, EPDM gasket, 2" BSP female both ends
★★★★☆(4.9)
~$12
The Banjo bulkhead fitting is the single most useful IBC tote fitting. It installs in a 2-3/8-inch drilled hole in any wall of the tote (or lid), creating a watertight threaded port where you can attach a valve, hose adapter, or pipe fitting. Use them to add drainage outlets to the tote side, create inlet ports, or connect multiple totes together. The two-piece design squeezes an EPDM rubber gasket for a positive seal without tools.
Size

Material
Polypropylene + EPDM
Max Pressure
15 PSI
✓ Pros
  • Watertight without sealants
  • No tools needed — hand-tight
  • Extremely versatile
  • Very affordable
✗ Cons
  • Requires drilled hole
  • 15 PSI max — not for pressurized systems
  • EPDM not for all chemicals

Best Quick-Connect
Banjo Camlock Coupling Set
2-inch Type C/E camlock pair, polypropylene
★★★★☆(4.7)
~$18/pair
Camlock couplings are the industrial standard for quick-connect fluid transfer. The Type C (female) coupler locks onto a Type E (male) adapter with a quarter-turn cam lever — one-handed, no tools. For frequent connections and disconnections (filling the tote from a tanker, emptying to equipment), camlocks save enormous time compared to threaded connections. Available in polypropylene (water, fertilizers) and aluminum or stainless for more demanding applications.

Quarter-turn cam, no tools
✓ Pros
  • One-handed quick connect
  • Industry-standard compatibility
  • Durable for repeated use
  • Aluminum/SS available for chemicals
✗ Cons
  • Requires matched pair (male + female)
  • Plastic types not for hot fluids
  • Can drip when disconnected under pressure

🔄
Best Adapter
Banjo 2" to 3/4" Garden Hose Adapter
BSP to garden hose thread reducer fitting
★★★★☆(4.6)
~$8
The single most common IBC tote fitting purchase — connecting a standard garden hose to the 2-inch butterfly valve outlet. This polypropylene reducer screws directly onto the 2-inch BSP butterfly valve and presents a standard 3/4-inch GHT (garden hose thread) female connection for any garden hose or drip irrigation line. Simple, cheap, and solves the most common IBC connection problem immediately.

Outlet
3/4" GHT female
Material
Polypropylene
Application
Garden hose, drip irrigation
✓ Pros
  • Solves the most common connection need
  • Very inexpensive
  • No tools needed
  • Works with any garden hose
✗ Cons
  • Restricts flow to 3/4" diameter
  • Not for industrial flow rates
  • Plastic degrades in UV over years

IBC Tote Fitting Basics

The three IBC tote connection points

Bottom outlet: 2-inch BSP butterfly valve. Connect to a valve, pump, camlock, or hose adapter here. This is your primary outlet for fluid removal.

Top bung (large): S60x6 thread — this is the 6-inch fill/access opening on top. Bung adapters convert it to 2-inch or 4-inch pipe thread for fill lines, level gauges, or immersion equipment.

Top bung (small): A 2-inch NPT vent plug. Replace with a vented cap or a fitting to connect a vent line or pressure gauge.

Hole sizing for bulkhead fittings

Each bulkhead fitting requires a specific hole size in the tote wall. Common sizes: 1/2-inch bulkhead → 1-inch hole; 3/4-inch → 1-3/8-inch hole; 1-inch → 1-5/8-inch hole; 2-inch → 2-3/8-inch hole. Use a stepped drill bit or hole saw. HDPE cuts cleanly — a sharp hole saw leaves a smooth, clean edge that seals properly against the gasket.

Material selection for chemical service

For water and agricultural fluids, polypropylene fittings with EPDM gaskets are standard and economical. For acids and oxidizers, use PVDF (Kynar) fittings with PTFE gaskets. For high-temperature or solvent service, 316 stainless steel fittings. When in doubt, consult a chemical compatibility chart for your specific fluid — fitting failures in chemical service are dangerous and expensive.

Frequently Asked Questions

IBC totes use multiple thread standards depending on the connection point. The bottom butterfly valve outlet is typically 2-inch BSP (British Standard Pipe) or occasionally 2-inch NPT. The large top bung is S60x6 (a metric standard specific to containers). The small top vent is usually 2-inch NPT. Measure or identify the thread before ordering fittings — BSP and NPT are not interchangeable.
Bulkhead fittings seal via their rubber gasket — hand-tighten until snug, then a quarter-turn more with pliers. No additional sealant is needed or recommended on the gasket face. Threaded connections use PTFE thread tape (3–4 wraps) for NPT threads, or a thread sealant like Rector Seal for metal-to-metal threads. BSP parallel threads require a gasket face seal — use a rubber washer or O-ring at the sealing face, not thread tape.
Yes — drill a hole in the tote wall and install a bulkhead fitting. A 2-inch bulkhead requires a 2-3/8-inch hole drilled with a hole saw. Position the outlet hole at the lowest point on the intended face for gravity drainage. Install the bulkhead, thread on a ball valve, and you have a second independently-controlled outlet. Multiple outlets allow filling one system while draining another without moving hoses.
