The valve is the most-replaced component on an IBC tote โ the factory butterfly valve works fine for basic water or diesel applications, but wears out quickly with harsh chemicals, freezes in cold climates, and doesn't provide the flow control that many applications need. Choosing the right valve type and material for your fluid prevents leaks, saves money on replacements, and gives you proper flow control.
Here's exactly what to buy for your specific fluid and application.

How to Choose an IBC Tote Valve
Thread type: BSP vs NPT
The IBC tote outlet is typically a 2-inch BSP (British Standard Pipe) thread โ identifiable by its parallel thread profile. Most North American valves use NPT (National Pipe Taper) thread, which has a tapered thread that seals by wedging. BSP and NPT are NOT interchangeable โ using the wrong type causes leaks. Verify your tote's thread standard before ordering a replacement valve.
European IBC totes (Schutz, Mauser, Greif) use S60x6 or DIN flanges at the outlet, which require an adapter before connecting a standard valve. American-assembled totes more often use 2-inch BSP direct thread at the outlet butterfly valve.
Material compatibility
Match the valve body and seat material to your fluid. For water, diesel, and agricultural chemicals: polypropylene body with EPDM seat is standard. For acids and bases: use PTFE-lined seats and Viton seals. For solvents: check specific solvent compatibility charts โ many aggressive solvents attack polypropylene. For potable water: use NSF-rated valves only.
Standard IBC outlet size is 2 inches
All standard IBC tote butterfly valves are 2-inch. Adapters are available to reduce to 3/4-inch (garden hose) or 1-inch connections. For drip irrigation, a 2-inch to 3/4-inch reducer connects directly to standard garden hose threads. The valve itself should stay 2-inch for maximum flow capacity from the tote.
